College of Engineering Supplemental Instruction

The LSU College of Engineering Supplemental Instruction (SI) program provides weekly study sessions for historically difficult engineering and computer science courses led by engineering peers who have excelled in the course (SI Leaders). During these sessions, SI Leaders utilize active learning strategies in a structured setting where students can share what they know, ask questions, and solve problems together.

Why attend SI?

In the Spring 2025 semester, across all engineering courses that offer SI sessions, students who did not attend SI scored an average of 4% lower than the class average. Students who attended between 1-33% scored an average of 8% higher. Students who attended 34%+ of the SI sessions for their course scored an average of 36% higher than the class average

Graph of outcomes using supplemental instruction

What SI Leaders do:

  • Hold 1-2 sessions per week at a regularly scheduled day/time
  • Hold office hours
  • Create content for SI Sessions
  • Attend the course as a model student (as often as possible)
  • Communicate with course professor and staff
  • Communicate with students enrolled in the course with session times and content
  • Make announcements in class about sessions when possible

What SI Leaders DO NOT do:

  • Grade assignments
  • Solve homework
  • Share attendance data with professors
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring outside scheduled office hours
  • Proctor exams

Supplemental Instruction

  • Peer-led
  • Content chosen by SI Leader
  • Not officially part of the class
  • Attendance is not shared with the professor
  • Low-stakes environment
  • Some concept review

Recitation Session

  • Instructor managed
  • Tied to class attendance (in most cases)
  • Attendance shared with the professor
  • Grading and assessments
  • Typically, no concept review
