Biography

Dr. Tyree Mitchell completed his predoctoral fellowship at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and received his PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from DePaul University. His research currently focuses on understanding group and identity processes in organizations. In essence, his research underscores how many issues of importance to organizations (e.g., developing leaders, maximizing leader and team effectiveness, improving race relations) are issues of social identity—the sense of self tied to our group memberships. As best summarized by John Turner, if you want to understand the individual in the group, you must understand the group in the individual.

Dr. Mitchell has received millions of dollars in research funding from major agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). His research has been published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Applied Psychology) and featured in popular press outlets (e.g., Forbes, Harvard Business Review). His recent book with University of Toronto Press, Searching for Trust in the Global Economy, provides insight into the cultural similarities and differences that emerge during the process of deciding to trust potential business partners in different regions of the world.

Dr. Mitchell is an honorary Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland. He currently serves as an Action Editor for Industrial and Organizational Psychology Journal, and as an editorial fellow for Journal of Applied Psychology. He is an editorial board member for the Journal of Business and Psychology, and the Journal of Leadership and Organization Studies. Dr. Mitchell has also served on review panels for NSF. He has also worked on research and consulting projects for several major agencies, such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
