Dear Colleagues,
As we move into the heart of the fall semester, I want to take a moment to reflect
on some remarkable achievements that highlight LSU’s trajectory toward our goal of
joining the ranks of the Association of American Universities (AAU). The strides we
are making as a faculty and university are undeniable, and they underscore the growing
recognition of LSU’s leadership in academia.
We recently learned that Gabriela González, Boyd Professor of Physics and Astronomy,
has been elected to the presidential line of the American Physical Society (APS),
an organization whose influence in the scientific community cannot be overstated.
APS presidents come from some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, and Dr.
González’s election positions her among such distinguished leaders. Her election speaks
volumes about the quality of research happening here at LSU and our ability to stand
shoulder-to-shoulder with AAU institutions like Harvard and the University of Chicago.
Similarly, Suzanne Marchand, Boyd Professor of History, has been elected vice president
of the American Historical Association (AHA) for 2025. This honor places her in line
to serve as president in 2026 and past president in 2027, joining leaders from AAU
universities like Duke and UT-Austin. Dr. Marchand’s accomplishments shine a light
on LSU’s humanities scholarship, which is a crucial pillar in our journey toward AAU
membership.
These accomplishments are not isolated. They reflect LSU’s growing national influence
across disciplines, and we are actively working to ensure that faculty members receive
the recognition they deserve. The Office of Academic Affairs has been focused on raising
the profile of LSU faculty by assisting with prestigious award nominations, and I
encourage you to visit our updated awards and recognition website to see our progress.
Every step forward—whether in the sciences, humanities, or other fields—demonstrates
that LSU is on the path toward AAU membership because of your contributions. It is
your leadership, research, and dedication to academic excellence that are pushing
us closer to this goal.
Thank you for your continued commitment to making LSU a leading force in higher education.
We have much to be proud of, and I look forward to the accomplishments ahead.
Sincerely,
Roy Haggerty LSU Executive Vice President and Provost
Code of Student Conduct Update
The LSU Student Code of Conduct has been updated to include a clear and convincing evidentiary standard for suspension
and expulsion cases in compliance with new legislation (House Bill 174). Additionally,
first-time academic integrity violations for undergraduate students may be resolved
informally, aligning with the behavioral misconduct process. Student Advocacy & Accountability
is working with the Faculty Senate Executive Committee on the possible implementation
of this academic integrity change.
